We offer a brief (15 minute) consult with Dr. Darley. During this appointment you will have time to summarize your sleep concerns, learn about naturopathic treatment approaches, and ask questions.
Insomnia can have many different causes, physical, emotional, or genetic. Insomnia is a primary treatment focus here at The Institute. We offer what is called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for insomnia. During a series of individual visits we will systematically rebuild the basis for healthy sleep. In the sleep clinic we will address the behaviors and thoughts that have contributed to insomnia. In addition we will assess your overall health, and the ways it is contributing your insomnia.
For those people who are currently taking prescription medications for sleep, we will work with you and the prescribing doctor to reduce the dose or completely eliminate it.
Circadian Rhythm Disorders
Circadian Rhythm Disorders are conditions in which your basic body functions are out of sync with the natural light-dark cycle. You may be an “owl” staying up late and then having difficulty getting up in the morning. Or you may be a “lark” who goes to bed early and gets up before the sun. If you have a circadian rhythm problem we will work with you so you can sleep when you need to, and feel energetic during the day. Treatment options include light therapy, exercise therapy, and herbs.
Chronic Sleep Deprivation and Fatigue
It is thought by many sleep specialists that we are chronically sleep deprived as a society. The body does not function properly when sleep deprived, causing health to deteriorate. If you suspect you are not getting adequate sleep we will establish how much sleep you need, and design a healthy sleep routine that allows you to feel energetic throughout the day. Why be tired throughout the day?
Hormonal Sleep Disturbances
For women hormone changes can influence the quality of your sleep, be it pregnancy, menopause or your monthly cycle. Here at The Institute we will assess your hormone status, then balance your hormones using behavioral techniques and natural medicine.
Restless Legs Syndrome and Movement Disorders
Have you ever noticed a creepy, crawling feeling in your legs while sitting in the evening? If so you may be suffering from a movement disorder. Some movement disorders maybe treated with specific nutrients. Others require pharmacological treatment. We will assess your symptoms and nutrient profile, and treat with natural medicine as appropriate.
Sleep Apnea and Breathing Disorders
Sleep apnea is a condition in which the upper airway relaxes so much during sleep that the airway is periodically blocked, causing a pause in breathing. In many cases this is best treated by CPAP therapy, which Dr. Darley does not prescribe, but is prescribed at allopathic sleep clinics. Chronic inflammation of the upper airway due to allergies, and being overweight can contribute to apnea. We can assess these contributing factors and treat them, thereby reducing the severity of sleep apnea.
Payment for services may be made by cash or check at the time of service. You will be given a receipt that can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. The Institute does not contract directly with insurance companies at this time.
